Maltese Outside Malta
The Maltese population experienced flows of emigration and migration. Our archives preserve some of the innumerable movements of people. The shipping records and welfare organisations in the countries involve give us a picture that is often more statistical than human. The thousands of Maltese who left the islands represent an export of the good and the bad – talent, habits, skills and vices. The suffering of the divide touched upon under the heading of Trauma is not often captured in the documentation. The focus of this section is aimed at highlighting a diversity of sources and also encouraging greater across nations collaboration. Thousands of Maltese have worked hard to keep the Maltese flame alight in the diaspora. Their records are complimentary to what we find in our archives and technology provides the archivist with new tools to build bridges with these communities. There is an imminent challenge to preserve the records of these Maltese communities in the diaspora that are losing the attachment with their homeland by the hour.
