Night and Time
The concept of time and its impact on daily life goes unnoticed. It is very much in-built in our habits and routines. But a lot of the infrastructure that surrounds us is there to measure time and adjust the habitat around the needs of the day. Our archives document the transitions from candlelight to gas to electricity and to future methods of artificial lighting. This is a never ending process and humanity will continue to adjust itself to overcome the darkness of the night and manage and utilise the light of the day. Another important dimension is that of sound. The soundscapes from the chimes of clock towers denote the segments of night and day. Traditions and customs linked to bell ringing are partially documented in church and official records. Much of it happened by tradition. The audio recordings captured as part of the Memorja project are providing new opportunities to link the aural with the written record.
