Language
One of the distinctive elements of Malta’s national identity is our language. Unfortunately this is not extensively represented in our main archives as most of the records are written in foreign languages. Notwithstanding, our archives did provide the sources for linguistic and toponomastic studies in the past. The records selected for this theme range from the representation of Maltese in certain religious or secular documentation to literary works and also the constant struggle for the language to mature, grow and survive. Records such as Caxaro’s cantilena were must have items under this theme. But other snippets from inputs given by organisations such as the Għaqda tal-Kittieba tal-Malti and authoritative figures such as Ä uże’ Aquilina are also included. These emphasize the need for a continuous navigation process from one archive to the other in the search for a holistic picture around any research topic. The records of non-governmental or semi-governmental bodies working in the field of the Maltese language need to be preserved for future generations as they are a living testimony to the continuous struggle of our language to survive the challenges of time.
