Infrastructure
The infrastructure of any country is a reflection of the needs of its inhabitants and the dominant social structures. It is also a reflection of its culture, life styles and economic strength. Maltese archives document the transition of Malta from one colonial occupation to another up to Independence, and the evolution of the country up to the present. A number of specialised archives preserve the drawings, designs and decision-making processes involved in such a build-up. The preference in the selection for this section was on items that are often overlooked due to the typology of archive where they are preserved. The fortifications plan developed by Turgot for Mdina in the eighteenth century is one such exemplar. A design of an elaborate system of fortifications for Mdina found in a religious order archive. Side by side in the same chapter we appreciate the fine designs by the established artists such as Abram Gatt, by not so-renowned people and the work of more contemporary artists. Archives are also all-inclusive and non-evaluational and remind us that even a design for a public convenience or a lamp post can be executed with a level of detail, style and sophistication.
