Leisure
The way the Maltese used to entertain themselves has been grouped under the leisure heading. Such activities varied from theatre attendance to participation in band club activities and festa rivalries amongst others. Occasionally we find evidence of leisure activity in the least expected places, such as playing cards at the University archives. The impact bands had on the socio-cultural and political life of Malta is extensively documented in band club archives. What is included in this book is just a teaser from a few band clubs aimed simply and making the reader ponder on the richness of these sources. Other leisure activities such as water sports are also referred to. At times the records are written when the necessary infrastructure for such events is built or endorsed by the state. Much input came from private individuals or organisations. A case in point is that of private baths in Sliema, or other permits for cinema or night club activities.
