Visitors
The concept of visitor in this section has been interpreted as any non-Maltese reaching Malta. Prominent persons such as St Paul, Garibaldi, Francesco Crispi, George Bush, Mihail Gorbachev and thousands others are often well documented in the official annals of government. Others found in Malta a place of refuge from persecution or an opportunity to better their standard of living. Their stories often remain hidden and undocumented. Another side of the story however is captured in travel diaries giving the perspective of outsiders on us, how we live, what we wear and what we eat. Millions of people visited Malta over the year as tourists. All have their story to tell. Some fell in love with Malta and the Maltese – the wayside chapels, the language, the festas. Others cannot stand the loud fireworks, the driving skills of some, and the overdevelopment. All these views, if captured, and if they ended in archives are mines of knowledge, awaiting to be explored. Other visitors turned residents and left a mark on society such as Richard Ellis who left this country an amazing photographic depiction of how Malta changed over three generations
