Fellowship

This section posed a great difficulty in identifying a title that precisely reflects its contents.  This was due to the variety and diversity of organisations and groupings represented in the selected documentation.  Side by side, we have religious orders, confraternities, masonic lodges, mutual help societies, leisure/cultural organisations such as band clubs, and other recently set up non-governmental organisations.  Confraternities and later mutual help societies had an economic dimension, and were precursors of the welfare state.  The historical importance of these archives contrasts with the worrying reality we are face nowadays.  It is often that the archives of these organisations become orphans as the mission of the creating body gets blurred or the entity ceases to exist altogether.  There needs to be a balancing act respecting the autonomy of such organisations yet the need to create necessary safeguards to protect the invaluable memories in the records.
